PSHE and Relationships Education

At Horsforth Newlaithes, we believe that PSHE and Relationships Education is an essential part of our curriculumand plays a vital role in preparing children to lead happy, healthy and fulfilling lives.

We provide a carefully planned, age-appropriate programme through which pupils learn about relationships, families, health, wellbeing and human development. Learning takes place within a safe, respectful and inclusive environment, where children feel able to ask questions, explore ideas and develop their understanding. Content is carefully matched to pupils’ age and maturity and complements relevant learning within the science curriculum.

PSHE and Relationships is taught through our One Life curriculum, which provides a deliberately planned and carefully sequenced programme designed to meet, and where appropriate go beyond, the Department for Education’s statutory expectations.

Through One Life, pupils learn how to look after themselves and others through three interconnected strands: Mental Fitness, Physical Fitness and Social Fitness. We believe that, for children to belong, believe and become, they need explicit teaching that helps them develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive mentally, physically and socially.

Our One Life curriculum is organised around a series of key challenges, which build progressively as pupils move through school:

crucial element of our One Life programme is ensuring that our children understand the warning signs linked to their mental, physical and social fitness. We have developed a traffic light system which supports the children to quickly identify whether they are staying ‘fit’ across the 3 different areas.

If you would like to find out more about our One Life programme, please don’t hesitate to contact school and speak to a member of staff.
