Our Governing Body plays an important part in the life and leadership of Newlaithes. Governors bring a wide range of skills, experience and perspectives to the school and work closely with the Headteacher and senior leaders to ensure that every child receives an excellent education.
The Governing Body provides strategic leadership, support and challenge. It ensures that the school’s vision, ethos and strategic direction are clearly defined, holds the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school, and oversees the effective use of the school’s financial resources.
Our governors are committed to ensuring that Newlaithes continues to develop and improve, while keeping the interests and experiences of our children at the heart of their decisions.

I have been a Primary School Teacher for about 25 years, working mainly in Leeds. I live in Horsforth where my, now adult, children went to High School. I am Governor for Reading and Writing, two areas of great strength in the school. Newlaithes has a highly committed and supportive group of governors who all have the best interests of the children at heart and I am very proud to have recently been voted in as chair to this Governing Body.

The Governing Body at Newlaithes is made up of committed individuals who bring a wide range of skills, experience and perspectives to the leadership of our school. Together, they share a responsibility for ensuring that every child at Newlaithes receives an excellent education and has the opportunity to belong, contribute and thrive.
Through regular meetings, visits to school and ongoing training, governors develop a strong understanding of our school, its strengths and its priorities for improvement. They work closely with school leaders, providing both support and challenge and helping to ensure that decisions are ambitious, well considered and always made in the best interests of our children.
Each governor takes particular responsibility for an aspect of the school’s work, working alongside leaders as a critical friend and improvement partner while maintaining strategic oversight of the school as a whole.

I have spent all of my career to date working within the higher education sector and my current role, at the University of York, focuses on the University’s strategy to ensure equality of opportunity for students from all backgrounds to access and succeed at University, as well as other equality, diversity and inclusion related activity.
Outside of work I am interested in all things creative and have two children who are currently at Newlaithes.
I joined the Governing Body in January 2021 as one of the Parent Governors, and since joining I have been fascinated to find out more about what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ and what is involved with the day-to-day running of a primary school. I have really enjoyed getting to know the staff and other Governors and am hoping to be able to support the school in working towards their goals.

Arabella Ashfield

My background is in elite sport. For 10 years I supported elite athletes with their personal and professional development whilst pursuing their sporting careers and over the last two years I have supported sports leaders with culture and well-being development. I continue to support practitioners in my former role through converting psychology research into applied practice and my research background is in positive psychology. Alongside this I have my own business as an executive coach supporting women through the motherhood journey primarily in the return-to-work phase.
I have a son who started reception in September 2023 and I joined the governing body in November 2023 as a co-opted governor. I look forward to being able to support the school and staff with my developmental approach and coaching skillset.

I have been working in education for 10 years in Leeds based schools. I studied Early Childhood Studies at Leeds Trinity University and have been working in Early Years settings ever since. I am passionate about ensuring every child receives a strong start to their education and working with families to remove barriers to learning. I am currently the Early Years Leader at Roundhay School and love what I do to this day. I believe that Early Years is where the magic begins and I am passionate in ensuring that every adult working with children has the skills needed to put down strong foundational roots for later success. I am excited to have joined the Governing Body at Horsforth Newlaithes this year and I look forward to being a part of this community. Thank you for having me!

How Governance Works
The Governing Body provides strategic leadership, support and challenge to the school. Governors do not manage the day-to-day operation of Newlaithes; this is the responsibility of the Headteacher and senior leadership team.
From September 2026, the Governing Body meets six times during each academic year as a Full Governing Body. This replaces the school’s previous standing committee structure and enables governors to maintain collective oversight of the school’s key priorities.
Through its meetings, the Governing Body considers educational standards and curriculum, safeguarding and inclusion, staffing, finance and resources, and the school’s wider strategic development. Panels or working groups may be convened when required for specific matters.
